WHAT’S BLOOMING WHEN?
Our flower season runs from Spring to Autumn, with no fixed start or end date. This is due to mother nature usually deciding for us! At the farm we grow a range of cut flowers, both perennial and annuals, as shown below.
SPRING
You have to love when Spring finally arrives! Spring as a flower farmer means lots of prepping beds and planting for summer, harvesting those much anticipated Spring blooms and staying on top of the weeds as the days continue to get longer.
Spring time here means plenty of Ranunculus, our major crop for this season. Also blooming at various times throughout Spring are Tulips, Alliums, Anemones, Chincherinchee, Peonies, Larkspur, Delphinium, Stock, Poppies, Billy Buttons, Scabiosa, Feverfew and Statice.
SUMMER
Heading into Summer is when the flower patch really gets going. Summer tasks involve harvesting blooms most days, starting seeds for succession planting, preparing beds for Autumn flowers and keeping on top of irrigation, fertilisation and pests!
Some varieties we have blooming over Summer are: Cosmos, Zinnias, Dahlias, Amaranth, Celosia, Astilbe, Liatris, Lupins, Strawflower, Gomphrena, Scabiosa, Feverfew, Billy Buttons, Delphinium, Sunflowers, Statice, Marigold, Rudbeckia, Roses and Hydrangeas.
AUTUMN
Dahlias are the true stand out for us in early Autumn, they love when the temperature starts to drop slightly and in this location are really at their best in March. Autumn tasks involve lots of harvesting often morning and night, starting cool flowers to plant and overwinter, and putting the summer annuals to rest.
Until the first frost appears, varieties flowering in Autumn are: Dahlias, Zinnias, Cosmos, Amaranth, Celosia, Strawflowers, Scabiosa, Poppies, Lupins, Billy Buttons, Roses, Marigold, Delphinium, China Aster, Statice, Feverfew and Hydrangeas.
